3 Picks For July 15’s UFC Fight Night Card

3 Picks For July 15’s UFC Fight Night Card
Frank Mir and Todd Duffee square off in the octagon as the headline bout for this week's UFC Fight Night in San Diego. We offer up our semi-fearless prediction for that tilt, plus two other noteworthy bouts on the card.

#10 Frank Mir (+155) vs. Todd Duffee (-190) – Heavyweight (Five Rounds)

Ladies and gentlemen, here’s your main event for this week’s UFC Fight Night card from San Diego. This tilt marks Todd Duffee’s first ever UFC top billed bout and it comes versus veteran fighter (and former heavyweight champ) Frank Mir, so interest is strong to see if Duffee can add to his three fight win streak. Those three bouts featured Duffee scoring the W before the first round was through. Simply put, Duffee’s aiming to rise on the card and he has an excellent track record of getting the KO/TKO in round one. Can the 29-year-old counter the submission component of Mir’s fighting style? That question will loom larger and larger as the contest rolls on and Duffee’s wrestling/jiu-jitsu training is put to the test. Mir comes into this fight with the glow of an impressive KO of Antonio Silva still surrounding him. Before that victory, Mir suffered four straight losses courtesy of big name opponents. Duffee is arguably the least decorated fighter to face Mir in eight years, although that certainly doesn’t mean he can be taken lightly. Duffee has the ability to soar up the heavyweight ranks and a victory over a name brand vet like Mir can help polish the resume. We’re giving Duffee the edge and recommend making sure you catch this fight right from the beginning or else you might miss it.

Our Pick: Duffee

#9 Josh Thomson (+155) vs. #11 Tony Ferguson (-190) – Lightweight (Three Rounds)

Josh Thomson and Tony Ferguson will be going toe-to-toe on Wednesday and there’s a reason why the odds are in Ferguson’s favour. The Ultimate Fighter 13 champ hasn’t lost a bout since 2012 and walks into the fight with an impressive run of victories achieved with both strikes and submissions. He’s versatile and opponents need to watch out for his rear naked choke. Thomson comes in looking to regain his Strikeforce championship form. He’s lost three of his last four bouts and one has to wonder if his takedown defense is strong enough to avoid Ferguson going for some ground and pound. Ferguson has the momentum and a steadily improving track record, so expect him to triumph.

Our Pick: Ferguson

#10 Holly Holm (-170) vs. #11 Marion Reneau (+140) – Bantamweight (Three Rounds)

Can Holly Holm’s undefeated record emerge unscathed after a tilt with the Belizean Bruiser? Holm’s gone 8-0 as an MMA pro and boasts a boxing pedigree that should make any opponent nervous. Still, we forsee a Marion Reneau victory in San Diego. The 38-year-old fighter has a quality submission game and wowed with a Performance of the Night W over Jessica Andrade earlier this year. Holm has the mystique, but Reneau has the tools to score a mild upset.

Our Pick: Reneau
