Our MLS Bets Of The Week
By Matt Pitt
FC Dallas (-135) vs. Colorado Rapids (+370)
FC Dallas moved eight points clear at the top of the Western Conference and lead the MLS overall by seven points, putting them on course for the Supporters’ Shield, following their 3-1 home win over Portland Timbers last week.
Goals from Mauro Diaz, Victor Ulloa, and Walker Zimmerman put the hosts 3-0 up, but an 87th minute consolation goals from Diego Valeri made it 3-1.
Dallas are unbeaten at home in the league this season (10-0-4), as are this week’s opponents Colorado Rapids, but the Rapids are poor away as is evident by their 2-5-6 record.
The past three meetings between these sides has ended in a 1-1 draw, with all three games being at Colorado. The last time they met in Dallas, in April 2015, the Rapids ran out 4-0 winners.
I can see the Rapids coming away with a point here, and with odds at Bovada on a tie being +255 there is plenty of value in that market.
Pick: Tie at +255
New York Red Bulls (-190) vs. DC United (+475)
Last week, the New York Red Bulls registered only their second away win (2-7-6) by beating Vancouver Whitecaps 1-0 thanks to Bradley Wright-Phillips’ 17th goal of the season.
Those three points helped the Red Bulls stay only one point behind NYCFC in the race for the Eastern Conference title, and they could overtake their city rivals if they beat DC United on home soil this weekend.
DC United have been far too inconsistent both home and away (7-9-11) and have tied far too many games. They have only one once on the road during this regular season, and I just cannot see them coming away with anything in this game thanks to Red Bulls’ 10-2-1 home form.
If you think DC can grab a point, you’ll find odds of +315, but it is difficult to look beyond a Red Bulls victory, and that is where my money is going.
Pick: New York Red Bulls at -190
New England Revolution (+110) vs. New York City FC (+240)
Both New England Revolution’s home form (6-4-4) and NYCFC’s away for (6-5-3) are strikingly similar, which suggests this game should be a tight affair, and the odds reflect this.
New England lost 1-0 to NYCFC in July 2016 in New England, but won 1-0 when the sides net at the Revs’ home in July 2015 so expect this to be relatively tight.
The Revs have only scored 31 goals this season with Lee Nguyen being the top scorer with only five goals, while the NYCFC have bagged 48 goals with 38 of those coming from either David Villa or Frank Lampard.
If the Revs can stop both of these NYCFC stars they have a chance, but the duo are playing amazing soccer right now and are practically unstoppable.
Pick: NYCFC to win at +240
