The 2019 MLS season is just about ready to start, and the championship field is more crowded than ever. Last year's winner of it all, Atlanta United FC, still looms in this picture as the favorite, but the New York Red Bulls, LA Galaxy, LA FC, New York City FC and Seattle Sounders are all neck and neck with the same tier. Let's break down what to expect this season.

Our guide to the 2019 MLS season will take you through all of the following:

  • Important MLS schedule dates
  • Complete MLS standings guide

The 2019 MLS Season

Last year’s campaign ended with a bang. In only their second MLS season, Atlanta United took home the championship, defeating the Portland Timbers in the final match. This year’s crop of MLS Cup hopefuls hasn’t changed much compared to last season, but there are still a ton of questions to answer and mitigating changes to account for.

Here are the most important notes and storylines to follow throughout the 2019 MLS Schedule.

Important MLS Schedule Dates

Opening Day: March 2

The MLS season will officially kick off on Saturday, March 2, with 10 head-to-head matchups. The highlight of opening day’s schedule will be the primetime meeting between the Chicago Fire and LA Galaxy at 8 p.m. ET.

Second Night of the Season: March 3

People tend to say the MLS season doesn’t really start until the reigning champs take the pitch, so you’ll want to circle Sunday, March 3 on your calendars. That’s when Atlanta United will get back to work, squaring off in an evening battle with a plucky D.C. United team.

Mid-Summer 2019: MLS All-Star Game

Though we are still waiting for details on the actual date, the league has confirmed that this year’s All-Star exhibition will take place at Orlando City Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

October 19: MLS Playoffs Begin

In the new postseason format, 14 teams make the cut, with the top two squads in each conference earning a first-round bye. This widens the field of playoff possibilities, which leaves enthusiastic bettors with plenty of different avenues to explore as they look to capitalize on the remaining championship odds.

November 10: MLS Cup

Will Atlanta United be trying to defend their title? Who else will be making the final heat? Is MLS going to crown a new champion altogether? We’ll get the answer on November 10 at the MLS Cup. The site has yet to be determined, but this date is set in stone and remains one you should keep at the front of your planning throughout the 2019 season.

New Expansion Team: FC Cincinnati

This is the last important piece of prep work you need to know in advance of the 2019 campaign. The MLS has added FC Cincinnati to the slate of teams, giving them a total of 24 squads.

No one expects them to accomplish much in their MLS debut, but Cincy emerged as a powerhouse in USL. They’ve also made some nice moves that could turn them into quality dark-horse bets. They picked up striker Fanendo Adi from the Portland Timbers just last year, and they’ve since acquired Greg Garza from Atlanta United.

Keep your eyes on this squad. They may be built for a surprise run.

MLS Future Bets 2019

Now we get to the good stuff! You’ll find the MLS Cups odds for all 24 teams below. We’ll begin with the lines for the four teams projected to finish atop the MLS Standings, and then journey on down to the rest of the field.

Top Favorites for 2019 MLS Cup

Atlanta United FC (+500)

Zero surprise here. Last year’s champs are well-positioned to repeat with another title. Losing Greg Garza to FC Cincinnati stings a little bit, but they added midfield attacker Pity Martinez to the fold and should have no trouble once again sitting near the top of the league-wide standings.

New York Red Bulls (+600)

This is yet another non-surprise. The New York Red Bulls led all MLS teams in total points last season and look poised to hover around the same area this year. With that said, more than a few experts are showing concern for their championship odds—most notably because replacing departed midfielder Tyler Adams is no small ask. This is probably a team you’ll want to wait and see on before investing in.

LA Galaxy (+800)

After keeping the same core together, lots of people expect the LA Galaxy to contend for an MLS title. But be careful not to get tempted by the oddsmakers’ predictions. The Galaxy finished 13th in the league in total points scored last season and didn’t make enough adjustments to suggest they’re on the verge of a massive leap. Indeed, many think that LA FC, which is getting ready for its second-ever MLS season, will wind up having a better year.

New York City FC (+900)

Expectations are mounting for New York City FC as they get set to begin their fifth season at the MLS level. New coach Dome Torrent is beloved for his strategies at both ends of the pitch, and they signed a talented attacker in Alex Mitrita over the offseason.
