New York Red Bulls (-145) vs. New York City FC (+355)
The third New York derby of the 2016 season takes place on Sunday, this one at the New York Red Bulls’ Red Bull Arena.
Both teams clashed on July 3 at the Yankee Stadium where NYCFC ran out 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Jack Harrison and David Villa, the latter having now scored 13 goals this season.
The win helped numb the pain of NYCFC’s 7-0 defeat at home to the Red Bulls on May 21, a result that looks to have been a flash in the pan because the blue half of New York are in fine form and top the Eastern Conference.
NYCFC beat Montreal Impact 3-1 last weekend to make it five wins in their last six games. Former Chelsea midfielder scored for the third game in a row in that game, and now has five goals this campaign.
Red Bulls are third in the Eastern Conference, but could go second if they beat their arch rivals. They threw away the lead last week against Philadelphia Union and drew 2-2, extending their run of unbeaten games to three.
The Red Bulls have a 4-1 record against NYCFC, scoring 14 goals to NYCFC’s four. They are 7-2-1 at home this season, with NYCFC 6-3-1 on the road, making the draw at +300 looking like a reasonable bet, although if any side will win this game I believe it will be Red Bulls at -145.
Pick: Tie at +300
Colorado Rapids (+127) vs. FC Dallas (+213)
Colorado Rapids host FC Dallas in a top of the Western Conference clash. If the Rapids win, they will go top of the conference, and who would have thought that could happen before a ball was kicked this season?
The Rapids are 8-0-2 at home so far, one of four teams (Dallas, LA Galaxy, and Real Salt Lake) to be unbeaten on home soil. They are 14 games unbeaten, having last lost in the league on April 9.
Dallas are 4-6-1 on the road, but full of confidence, as are most teams who top the league at this stage of the season.
Both games between these sides last season ended in 1-1 draws, and the Rapids have only won one of their last six home matches against Dallas (they have drawn three) dating back to 2012.
I think this will be another draw, which you can find odds of +240. There’s not much to separate the teams, as the odds reflect.
Pick: Tie at +240
New England Revolution (-161) vs. Chicago Fire (+426)
New England Revolution can put some distance between themselves and D.C. United in the Eastern Conference playoffs race if they can secure all three points against a poor Chicago Fire Team.
While the Revs’ home form has been slightly erratic (4-2-4), Fire are hopeless on the road and are still without a win in the 2016 regular season (0-7-2).
New England has won the past three meetings with the Fire at home, winning 2-0, 2-0, and 2-1, and I fully expect them to make it four consecutive wins when the 90-minutes are completed at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.
Pick: New England to win at -161
