How To Win Your MLS Bets

How To Win Your MLS Bets
This week’s 2016 MLS regular season schedule throws up some interesting clashes, but the fixture of the weekend simply has to be LA Galaxy versus New York Red Bulls. Who will win that one?

MLS Week 22 Betting Lines Advice

By Matt Pitt

LA Galaxy (-145) vs. New York Red Bulls (+395)

 LA Galaxy

Easily the most exciting fixture on the schedule this week takes place at the StubHub Centre in California where the LA Galaxy take on the New York Red Bulls.

Galaxy were held to a 1-1 draw in the last outing, ending their four-game winning streak, but extending their unbeaten run to seven games, which is partly why they are -145 favorites for all three points against the Red Bulls.

Another reason is Galaxy are unbeaten in 10 home games this season (6-0-4) while the Red Bulls are, frankly, awful on the road (1-7-4).

The Red Bulls are in decent form, being unbeaten in five games (2-0-3) with forward Bradley Wright-Phillips enjoying a purple patch that has seen him score 12 goals in his last 16 appearances, tying him for second in the MLS Golden Boot standings.

You have to go back to September 2014 to find the corresponding fixture between these two Goliaths, a game Galaxy won 4-0.

Although I do not think there will be a similar scoreline this time around, the Red Bulls dreadful away form, coupled with the long trip across the country to California, means Galaxy should win this game, and possibly climb to second in the Western Conference.

Pick: LA Galaxy to win at -145

Portland Timbers (-125) vs. Sporting Kansas City (+330)

Sporting KC

A win for Portland Timbers at home to Sporting Kansas City could see them enter the playoff places and rejuvenate their season.

Timbers should be much higher up the table if you look at their home form (7-3-2), yet they find themselves in seventh place thanks in part to having not won away from home all season (0-5-6).

Sporting KC are in the playoff places as they occupy fourth spot partly due to their 8-4-1 home form. Again, on the road they are poor, having lost six of their 11 games to date (2-6-3).

Sporting has come away with all three points in two of their five visits to Portland, and although Portland should nick this game, the +330 available on a Kansas win looks too good to turn down this week.

Pick: Sporting Kansas City to win at +330

Colorado Rapids (-120) vs. Vancouver Whitecaps (+330)

Colorado Rapids

The high flying Colorado Rapids, who are 8-0-3 at home, entertain the Vancouver Whitecaps, 3-7-1 on the road, hoping to put last weekend’s heavy defeat behind them.

Rapids were demolished 5-1 at NYCFC last week, ending their 15-game undefeated streak, the fifth-longest in MLS history. It was a freak result as Rapids had previously only conceded 14 goals in their previous 20 games.

Whitecaps almost had Rapids beaten the last time they met, leading 2-1 deep into injury time before Axel Sjoberg equalized at the death.

They met twice at Rapids’ Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in 2015, with Rapids winning both games, 2-1 and 1-0, and I fully expect a similar result this weekend in 2016.

Pick: Colorado Rapids to win at -120

Other Fixtures

San Jose Earthquakes (+130) vs NYCFC (+215)

DC United (-110) vs. Philadelphia Union (+280)

Toronto FC (+115) vs. New England Revolution (+230)

Montreal impact (-169) vs. Houston Dynamo (+475)

Real Salt Lake (-125) vs. Chicago Fire (+525)

Orlando City (+125) vs. Seattle Sounders (+215)
