Predicting NBA’s 5 Best & Worst Offenses

By Dan Favale

Five Best Offenses

5. Toronto Raptors

NBA Title Odds: +6000

Eastern Conference Championship Odds: +1500

The Toronto Raptors finished fifth in defensive efficiency last season, and that shouldn’t change now. Kyle Lowry is one of the best point guards in the NBA, and a healthy DeMarre Carroll allows them to unlock some truly special small-ball combinations that will pump in a ton of points and do so in a hurry.

Though the Raptors flirted with a top-10 defense last year, that’s not going to be the case this season. They lost Bismack Biyombo to free agency and don’t have a defensive specialist in the middle. That, coupled with their esteemed offense, makes for great over betting.

4. San Antonio Spurs

NBA Title Odds: +900

Western Conference Championship Odds: +400

The San Antonio Spurs no longer play particularly fast. They aren’t going to shoot as many threes as other teams these days, either. But dammit all if they won’t deploy one of the most efficient offenses in the Association. Kawhi Leonard is an absolute stud, LaMarcus Aldridge and Pau Gasol hit a ton of tough shots, and the team has a bunch of crafty ball-handlers who create space within half-court sets.

This does not, however, make the Spurs an unconditional over pick. Their defense is spectacular. If they’re going up against a good offense, that’s when you should consider betting the over on them.

3. Cleveland Cavaliers

NBA Title Odds: +300

Eastern Conference Championship Odds: -330

Truthfully, the Cleveland Cavaliers should be higher on the offensive scale. Their starting five, headlined by LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love, is among the most potent opening lineup we’ve seen over the last couple decades.

But Cleveland operates on a plane all its own in the Eastern Conference and, as such, will sleepwalk through part of the regular season. The Cavaliers defense can be quite good, so you won’t want to bet the over blindly. In most situations, though, they’re a solid over investment.

2. Houston Rockets

NBA Title Odds: +10000

Western Conference Championship Odds: +6000

In the interest of being honest, I’m not entirely unconvinced the Houston Rockets won’t have the best offense in the league. Head coach Mike D’Antoni is a schematic sage, and James Harden is one of the best pure scorers alive.

Do not, however, view the Rockets as a real championship or Western Conference threat. Their defense is that darn bad. They are intriguing as reliable over plays, because their phenomenal offense is complemented by that flimsy defense, but you shouldn’t seek to use them as more than single-game plays.

1. Golden State Warriors

NBA Title Odds: +175

Western Conference Championship Odds: -330

Who else?

It will take some time for the Golden State Warriors to integrate Kevin Durant into their offensive game plan. If that much wasn’t clear before, it was undeniably evident after their season-opener against the Spurs.

Still, the Warriors will be great on the offensive end amid this learning curve. And while their defense may also end up finishing in the top five of efficiency, it doesn’t matter. They score enough regularly to carry the hopes of over betters.

Oh, and by the way, if you’re looking for the rare championship-lock bet, these Warriors, onset struggles and all, are as close as you’ll get.

Five Worst Offenses

5. Phoenix Suns

NBA Title Odds: +50000

Western Conference Championship Odds: +30000

The Phoenix Suns offense should, in theory, be able to stave off a bottom-five finish. Brandon Knight and Eric Bledsoe are healthy, and they moved the former to the bench, ensuring they’ll have an above-average floor general running the second-unit show.

But we don’t have a whole lot of other options. The Suns lack offensive talent in the froncourt, and their point guards haven’t been able to stay healthy over the last few seasons. In lieu of investing in their futile futures, try working the over. Their offense isn’t good enough to do this without question, but their defense should be bad enough go make it worthwhile.

4. Orlando Magic

NBA Title Odds: +15000

Eastern Conference Championship Odds: +5000

Thank a complete absence of floor spacing for the Orlando Magic’s appearance here. They are trying to get Bismack Biyombo, Nikola Vucevic and Serge Ibaka to coexist, even though they are all best suited at the center position. And they’re trying to move Aaron Gordon, a natural 4 or, perhaps, 5, to the 3.

Sprinkle in a starting point guard, in Elfrid Payton, who is an unfinished product with an inconsistent jumper, and you’ll be glad you avoided buying any sort of stock in this team. Orlando should be viewed as situation under plays—their defense is a mystery—and nothing more.

3. Brooklyn Nets

NBA Title Odds: +25000

Eastern Conference Championship Odds: +20000

Can Jeremy Lin be the primary point guard for a top-notch offense? We don’t know. And we’re most certainly not going to be finiding out this season. He doesn’t have the surrounding personnel to warrant those expectations.

For now, his Brooklyn Nets are an investor’s waste. Try experimenting with their overs, though. They have a cruddy defense to go along with this low offensive ceiling, so the scoreboard should expload whenever they’re facing a quality opponent.

2. Milwaukee Bucks

NBA Title Odds: +15000

Eastern Conference Championship Odds: +5000

The mere existence of Giannis Antetokounmpo makes me not want to write this. He is so good and only getting better. The Milwaukee Bucks’ offense will one day be fine.

That day just isn’t today.

Things were rocky as they were, with Greg Monroe soaking up time and touches in the post, never once truly fitting into the team’s offensive vision. And now the Bucks have lost Khris Middleton for most, if not all, of this season. Their floor-spacing potential, or lack thereof, cannot rebound from that absence.

Wait on deciding what kind of picks, over or under, the Bucks are best suited for until you see how the defense performs. If it’s up to snuff, be prepared to mix up your wagers; if it’s not, the over will be your best friend.

1. Philadelphia 76ers

NBA Title Odds: +25000

Eastern Conference Championship Odds: -12500

Surprise!

The Philadelphia 76ers should yet again have the NBA’s worst offense. Rookie Ben Simmons whould change things if he was healthy, but he’s not. Until he returns, the Sixers will be offensive bottom-feeders and unworthy of everything but single-game over bets against most of their opponents.
