Best Bets: Eastern Conference Champion

These will be the teams we like most to win the Eastern Conference. Please note that these odds reflect their chances of reaching the Stanley Cupnot winning it.

Tampa Bay Lightning (+325)

Certain people will believe the Lightning are getting too much love. They’re the odds-on favorites to not just come out of the East, but to win the whole shebang.

Maybe that doubt is fair. After all, the Lightning were swept in the first round of playoffs last year by the Blue Jackets. But postseason flameouts happen.

We’re dealing with a juggernaut here. The Lightning ranked first in goals scored and fifth in goals allowed last season, and they’re basically returning the same roster. Learn to love them.

Boston Bruins (+500)

Last year’s Stanley Cup runner-up isn’t going anywhere. The Boston Bruins look the part of a contender.

Questions about their offense remain. They’re more prone to gutting out victories. That’s mostly fine. Their defense is that stacked and will only get better. Younger standouts like Brandon Carlo and Charlie McAvoy are just getting started and are bound to improve.

Washington Capitals (+1000)

Expecting to see the Maple Leafs (+400)? Well, rest assured, this isn’t a typo.

While the Maple Leafs belong in the larger contender conversation, they’re getting too many votes of confidence. They have the second-best Stanley Cup odds overall, which also means sportsbooks are giving them a better chance to win the East than the Bruins, against whom they lost in the first round last year. We’re not here for that.

The Capitals are a better choice. They were good last season after winning the Stanley Cup in 2018, but they weren’t great. They ran it back and seemed stale. This year will be different. They exchanged five mainstays from the previous roster for fresh blood. Don’t be surprised if they wind up as a mid-end powerhouse.

OSB’s Eastern Conference Recommendation: Tampa Bay Lightning (+325)

Best Bets: Western Conference Champion

These are our favorite picks to win the Western Conference. Once again: The odds reflect their chances of reaching the Stanley Cupnot winning it.

Vegas Golden Knights (+375)

Resist the urge to doubt the Golden Knights. Losing guys like Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, Ryan Carpenter, Colin Miller, Nikita Guseve and Erik Haula stings, but it won’t be the end of the world.

The Knights still have one of the stingiest defenses around. And while they have the look of a rebuilding team after flipping Gusev to the Devils for draft picks, they’re deeper on their back lines than most realize.

St. Louis Blues (+650)

Let’s give it up for the reigning champs, shall we? Many are out on them. That almost makes sense. It is incredibly hard to repeat—it has happened just once in the past 20-plus years—and St. Louis didn’t make any meaningful changes to the roster.

Who cares? The Blues weren’t due for a shakeup. Five of their six leading goal-getters are under 30, and two aren’t even 26. Championship fatigue is an ever-present danger, but the Blues weren’t considered genuine contenders for parts of last season.

They don’t figure to enter their championship defense with the same sense of entitlement or acceptance as many other squads do.

Nashville Predators (+800)

Consecutive early playoff round exits clearly weren’t sitting well with the Predators. So they went out and picked up Matt Duchene to man the center position. Now it’s time to take them seriously.

Nashville might have the best defense in the league. For real. Adding some firepower to the offensive side of the rink will only make them scarier. Having Duchene and Viktor Arvidsson in the same rotation is almost unfair to opponents.

OSB’s Western Conference Recommendation: Nashville Predators (+800)

Stanley Cup Winner Prediction

Feel free to lean into the absolute Stanley Cup favorite, because that’s what we’re doing.

Choosing the Lightning is not a cliche. Nor is it a cop-out. They deserve to be considered consummate favorites. They graded out as the most dominant regular season team last year—and one of the most formidable contingents in recent history.

Getting past their first-round flop takes a little leap of faith. Make it. No other team is as equipped to finish in the top five of both goals scored and goals allowed.

OSB’s Stanley Cup Pick: Tampa Bay Lightning (+750)
