AL Divisional Series get underway with a pair of intriguing matchups. The top-ranked Cleveland Indians will face the New York Yankees in one series, while the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox will square off in a best-of-five set. We break down both ALDS series and offer our prediction for both.

Houston Astros (-165) vs. Boston Red Sox (+135)

There American League Divisional Series everyone’s been anticipating gets underway on Thursday afternoon as the Astros host the Red Sox in Game 1 of the best-of-five set.

The Astros, coming off a remarkable 101-61 record and a division pennant, head into the opening matchup as the expected favorites at -165 to win the series according to oddsmakers. However, expect the money to roll in on the Red Sox, who enter the contest as intriguing +135 underdogs to take down the Astros and advance to the AL Championship Series. Houston will enjoy home-field advantage, but much of the club’s success has come away from Minute Maid Park.

The Astros picked up 53 wins on the road, while only dropping 28 at the same time.


This series will pit two of the top starting rotations in the Big Leagues, as lefty Chris Sale will take the mound for the BoSox in the opener, followed by Drew Pomeranz. The Astros will counter with a pair of Cy Younger pitchers in Justin Verlander, who the club added at the trade deadline to beef up its rotation, followed by Dallas Keuchel in Game 2. The Astros scored the most runs in the American League with 896 — 111 more than the Red Sox.

After coming up short in the championship against the Chicago Cubs a year ago, the Tribe added a couple key pieces in the off-season to strengthen their chances of winning their first crown in nearly 70 years. They’ll get that opportunity on Thursday evening when Cleveland plays host to the New York Yankees in the opener of their ALDS.

The Indians enter the series as overwhelming -165 favorites to defeat the young Yankees according to odds. After topping the Al Central Division with a 102-60 record, the Indians will be looking to make easy work of the Yankees, who are coming off a Wild Card victory over the Minnesota Twins. New York heads to Cleveland as the +135 dark horse to take down the best team in the American League.


The spotlight will be on the starting rotation for both sides as the Yankees will rely on the duo of Jon Gray and Luis Severino. At the other end, the Indians have a strong starting four that includes Corey Kluber, who is scheduled to take the mound in Game 2.

The Indians boast one of the best offenses in the league, but the club’s defense and shutdown bullpen allowed them to give up the fewest runs against in the MLB this season.

Take the Indians to easily get past the Yankees in 3 or 4 games.
