MLS Game Predictions & Analysis
MLS Weekend Preview
LA Galaxy (-125) vs. Portland Timbers (+360)
The Galaxy return home to the StubHub Center following their second on the road shutout of the season following their goalless draw with the Vancouver Whitecaps. LA Galaxy have won both of their home ties this season and we expect them to make it three from three when they entertain Portland Timbers.
Galaxy’s side is weakened with the injuries to Robbie Keane (knee surgery), Steven Gerrard (calf), and Giovani dos Santos (leg), but Galaxy have a superb record against the Timbers with last season’s 2-5 home defeat being a blip on a record of winning six of the past seven meetings.
The Timbers were hammered 4-1 on their travels to Orland City SC last week, and while we do not expect a similar scoreline in this fixture, it is hard to look beyond a Galaxy victory.
Pick: LA Galaxy at -125
New York City FC (-115) vs. Chicago Fire (+305)
New York City FC return to action after a week off and that small break in the action should be enough to see them play their way to victory when the Chicago Fire visit the Yankee Stadium. The teams have already met once this season, at Chicago’s Toyota Park, and NYCFC ran out 2-1 winners.
NYCFC will probably be without Frank Lampard who is back training after some time on the sidelines, but even without the veteran Englishman they have enough firepower to see off the Fire, even if the latter will be in buoyant mood after securing their first win of the season last weekend, which also happened to be Veljko Paunovic’s first win as an MLS Coach.
Pick: New York City FC at -115
Montreal Impact (+116) vs. Columbus Crew SC (+240)
Montreal Impact slipped to their second consecutive shutout loss when they fell at the hands of Seattle Sounders FC last Saturday and will be looking to getting back to winning ways against an out of sorts Columbus Crew SC side who are without a win in 2016.
Impact have won their previous two home fixtures against the Crew (2-1 and 3-0) but we see this being a tie, not least because talisman forward Didier Drogba will once again be absent from the action.
Crew have drawn their previous two fixtures after losing their opening two games. Kei Kamara is yet to show the brilliance of 2015, although it is only a matter of time before he does, and despite the Crew mustering 45 shots on goals (21 on target) they have only scores three goals.
Pick: Draw at +225
