MLS Weekend In Review

MLS Weekend In Review
Week 11 of the 2016 Major League Soccer season was another fine spectacle, but which of the teams came away from their fixtures smiling, and who had faces like thunder?

MLS Summary & Analysis

By Matt Pitt

D.C. United 2 – 0 New York Red Bulls

DC United and New York Red Bulls

D.C. United inflicted a seventh defeat of the season on the New York Red Bulls, who again failed to score during the 90-minutes, leaving the Red Bulls without a win in their six away fixtures in 2016 (0-5-1).

A swift attacking move was finished off by Alvaro Saborio in the 20th minute to put D.C. United 1-0 to the good, before Patrick Nyarko doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 43rd minute to put the game beyond the Red Bulls.

Worryingly for fans of the Red Bulls, their side never looked like they were in the game at any point and their performance is best described as flat. The Red Bulls now find themselves eighth in the Eastern Conference, three points behind New England Revolution for a playoff place. Something needs to change in New York and change sooner rather than later.

Columbus Crew SC 1 – 1 Colorado Rapids

Colorado Rapids

The Colorado Rapids extended their unbeaten run to seven games with a 1-1 draw on the road to Columbus Crew. Who played their first game without Kei Kamara who was traded to New England Revolution at the deadline last Thursday.

Crew took the lead on 23 minutes through a Cedrick goals, but the Rapids pulled level through Kevin Doyle who headed home a corner by Shkelzen Gashi.

It was an evenly matched game for most of the 90-minutes, and a tie was probably the fairest result to both sides. The Rapids, who top both the Western Conference and the MLS overall, will be looking forward to a few days’ break as this was their third game in eight days.

Portland Timbers 1 – 2 NYC FC

NYCFC moved up to second in the Eastern Conference thanks to a 2-1 away victory at Portland Timbers, a result that leaves the Timbers second bottom in the Western Conference.

The win was NYCFC’s third in a row and came courtesy of a 12th minute goal from David Villa and a wonder goal from Thomas McNamara in the 65th minute, goals sandwiching the 55th minute equaliser from Fanendo Adi.

The NYCFC defence was immense and if they continue to defend like they did in this fixture, the newest New York team could seriously be going places.
