MLS Weekend Preview
MLS Game Odds & Predictions
New York Red Bulls (+201) to win Montreal Impact (+142)
New York Red Bulls’ head coach, Patrick Vieira, was part of an Arsenal F.C team that went a staggering 49 matches unbeaten so he will not have taken his team’s 0-2 defeat against Toronto FC on Week 1 lightly.
The reigning Supporters’ Shield holders are unbeaten in six games against Week 2’s opponents, Montreal Impact, winning four of those matches. In fact, you have to go back to 2013, when the team’s first met, to find a Montreal victory.
Although the Impact have home advantage and are in confident mood following their 3-2 victory on the road at Vancouver Whitecaps last week, I believe the Red Bulls will be too strong and too fired up for them to handle and at +201 in the early betting, the Red Bulls look to be a steal.
Pick: Red Bulls (+201)
LA Galaxy (+150) to win at Colorado Rapids (+210) and Over 2.5 Goals Scored
There are few teams in the MLS who have the star quality of the LA Galaxy roster, and that showed in their 4-1 demolition of DC United during Week 1. Galaxy found themselves trailing 1-0 after only five minutes of their match with DC United, but their class shone through and four second-half goals saw them win comfortably.
While the Galaxy were busy tearing their opponents apart, Colorado Rapids were enduring a frustrating time on the pitch against San Jose Earthquakes. Despite mustering 18 shots to San Jose’s seven, the Rapids slumped to a 1-0 defeat.
LA Galaxy are just too strong for the Colorado Rapids, which is reflected in the betting odds, and have one three and tied one of their last four meetings. During those four meetings there have been 21 goals scored, which makes parlaying the LA Galaxy with the Over 2.5 Goals market look favorable. A $25 parlay bet should return in the region of $110.
Pick: LA Galaxy (+150) and Over 2.5 Goals
Columbus (-169) to beat Philadelphia (+500) and Over 2.5 Goals Scored
Columbus Crew SC go into their Week 2 fixture against Philadelphia Union as short-priced favorites (-169), which does not yield too much value betting the market on its own, but pairing it with the Over 2.5 Goals market (-151) makes it a more attractive proposition.
Crew SC may have lost 2-1 to Portland Timbers in their opening fixture, but have never lost to Union in seven previous meetings, winning six of those. When the sides last faced each other, Crew SC ran out 2-1 winners, with them winning the two prior encounter 3-0 and 4-1, so this fixture has a history of goals.
Union are habitual slow starters in the MLS and kept up their unwanted record of only winning once on opening day of a season since 2011 when they crashed 2-0 at FC Dallas. Union’s passing was woeful (69% completed) and only two of their 12 shots hit the target. Playing like this simply is not good enough and anything remotely similar will be capitalized on by slick and efficient Crew SC.
Pick: Columbus Crew SC (-169) and Over 2.5 Goals
