Henrik Lundqvist turned back the clock in the opening round of the NHL playoffs. The former Vezina Trophy winner will look to continue that streak when the New York Rangers open the Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Ottawa Senators Thursday at Madison Square Garden.
Coming off a huge first-round series win over the Montreal Canadiens, the Rangers head into their next matchup as -145 favorites to advance to the conference championship for the second time in three years.
However the Senators have already proved they won’t be pushovers in these playoffs, knocking out the Boston Bruins in the first round. Despite entering this best-of-seven showdown as +125 underdogs, the Senators are legitimate contenders to reach the Eastern Conference final.
For a club that primarily focuses on defense, the Senators turned a few heads with their offense in the opening round, netting a fourth-best 15 goals to take down the Bruins. The Rangers were just one goal off of Ottawa’s pace, proving this series could turn into a high-scoring affair.
A player definitely to keep an eye on will be winger Mark Stone — one of the best defensive forwards in the NHL who is a threat with the puck as well. Bovada is offering a -115 over/under line with a total point projection of four for Stone, who collected two points in the opening round.
The Rangers spread out the scoring in the first round much like they have done all season long. Mike Zibanejad — a former Senator — leads the team with four playoff points. Mats Zuccarello, who heads into the second round with three goals, has a total points projection of four by Bovada — a wager bettors should take the over on as well.
Looking for a few appealing series prop bets to put your money on? Bovada has you covered once again.
The clubs met three times during the 2016-17 season, with the Senators winning twice. You can expect things to be just as tight when the puck drops for Game 1 on Thursday night. In a series that is expected to go the distance, Bovada is offering intriguing +375 odds the Rangers will advance in seven games.
The same outcome with the Senators defeating the Rangers in seven games will pay +500 odds — a wager worth taking at this point of the series. Regardless if the conference semifinal goes six or seven games, Bovada is offering bettors +190 odds on how long the series will last.
We have yet to see a Game 7 these playoffs, but this matchup is sure to be a lengthy series with the Senators coming out on top.
Pick: Ottawa Senators (+125)
