Best NHL bets to make on Saturday night
By Bob Duff
A look at some of Saturday’s more intriguing NHL wagers, with odds provided by SportsBetting.ag:
Long winning streaks usually come crashing down in spectacular fashion and that’s exactly what happened when the Blue Jackets fell one short of tying Pittsburgh’s NHL-record 17-game streak. Thursday’s 5-0 loss at Washington was the first suffered by the Blue Jackets since Nov. 26 and also ended their point streak at 17 games. Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky was hooked from the loss, just the second time he’s been pulled from a game this season.
Seeking to start another streak, the Rangers won’t be easy fodder. New York has won four of five and have lost only three of the last 10. Forward Chris Kreider scored 11 goals in December, the first Ranger to post a double-digit goals month in nearly three years.
Pick: The Rangers (+113)
Coming off their impressive 5-0 win over Columbus, which halted the Blue Jackets winning streak at 16 games, the Capitals will look to extend their own run of victories to five successive games, and should be in good shape to do so. Washington has won four straight against the Senators, including a 2-1 triumph on New Year’s Day. But the Capitals haven’t beaten Ottawa in five successive games since 1995-96.
Ottawa, Washington and Minnesota share the NHL lead in shutouts with five apiece, although all of Washington’s goose eggs have been posted on home ice.
This will be the first action for the Senators since that Jan. 1 loss to to the Capitals, and they are currently on a three-game losing skid, tying a season high for consecutive losses. Ottawa forward Kyle Turris has scored seven career goals against the Capitals.
Pick: The Capitals (-150)
In their last game the Wings did what the Sharks couldn’t do in two attempts earlier in the week. They beat the Los Angeles Kings, getting two goals from Thomas Vanek and a shutout from rookie goalie Jared Coreau. Detroit is 1-1 on its California road trip, blanking the Kings 4-0 after being blanked 2-0 in Anaheim. Detroit has won just 11 of its last 31 games. Defensemen Brendan Smith (knee) and Niklas Kronwall (lower body) are out for the Wings.
The Sharks have lost three straight, tying a season high. San Jose blew a 4-2 third-period lead and fell 5-4 to the Minnesota Wild in its most recent setback. San Jose’s Kevin Labanc has points in four straight games.
Pick: The Red Wings (+183)
Rematch of a seven-game second-round playoff series of last spring. The Stars are 3-1-1 since a 3-2 overtime loss to St. Louis on Dec. 20 but are 0-1-1 in their last two games. Dallas is 2-8 in OT this season. Tyler Seguin leads the Stars with 14-25-39 numbers and has 4-3-7 numbers during a five-game point streak.
Stars captain Jamie Benn (foot) missed Wednesday’s OT loss to Montreal with a foot injury. Left-winger Antoine Roussel is back in the Dallas lineup after missing four games with a lower body injury.
Playing the fifth game of a season-high six-game homestand, St. Louis is just 2-4 in its last six home games. Defenseman Carl Gunnarsson (lower body injury) missed Wednesday’s loss to Carolina. The Blues have lost 11 games this season to teams that don’t currently hold a playoff position.
Pick: The Blues (-155)
