Predictions and NFL week 17 betting preview
NFL week 17 betting preamble

Here are a few NFL betting options to consider, with odds courtesy of BetOnline.
Win and they’re in. The Redskins can lock up the No. 6 and a spot in the post-season with a victory on Sunday when they host the New York Giants Sunday at FedEx Field.
As long as the Detroit-Green Bay game doesn’t end in a draw, a victory will advance the Redskins, who enter Sunday’s match as -345 favorites at home where they’ve posted a 4-3 record this season. The Giants, who have already locked up the No. 5 seed in the NFC, are +270 underdogs.
This is the second meeting between the two NFC East rivals, as the Redskins defeated the Giants by a two-point margin back in Week 3.
Washington boasts one of the best offenses in the NFL, ranking second overall in passing yards. That’s thanks in part to quarterback Kirk Cousins, whose 4,630 passing yards in 2016 ranks second overall just behind Drew Brees.
The Giants have won six of the previous 10 meetings, however to a playoff spot already secured, head coach Ben McAdoo may opt to rest his superstar players.
If you’re betting the over/under, BetOnline has set the total points projection at 44. While both sides are more than capable of putting up big scores, expect a tighter affair on Sunday with the Redskins squeaking out the much-needed victory.
Pick: Washington Redskins (-345) and the Under (44)
The NFC North division is up for grabs as the Green Packers and Detroit Lions do battle in the final regular-season game of the season Sunday night at Ford Field.
The Packers — winners of five consecutive games — can lock up the division with a victory on the road, where they’ve struggled at times this season. Green Bay enters the highly anticipated contest as -178 favorites. The Lions, who failed to secure a post-season berth last weekend, are appealing +158 underdogs.
Look for the Packers to continue doing what they do best: throwing the ball. The Lions will have a tough task against Green Bay’s one-two punch of quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver Jordy Nelson, who have fuelled the team’s recent success. Rodgers has thrown a league-leading 36 touchdown passes and Nelson has reeled in 14 of them, which also ranks first among receivers.
The head-to-head history over the last 10 meetings between these NFC North rivals has been all Green Bay, which has won seven times over that span.
Take the under on BetOnline’s 49.5 total points projection in a game that will be close right down to the final whistle.
Pick: Green Bay Packers (-178) and the Under (49.5)
Oakland’s loss is Kansas City’s gain. With the Raiders losing starting quarterback Derek Carr to a season-ending leg injury, that opened the door wide open for the Chiefs, who can lock up the AFC title with a win over the San Diego Chargers on Sunday coupled with a Raiders loss to Denver.
The Chiefs, who led the division for much of the season, enter the contest as -240 favorites. The Chargers — out of post-season contention — don’t have much to play for and go into Kansas City as +200 underdogs.
The Chargers will have to zero in on Chiefs’ all-star tight end Travis Kelce, who’s racked up 1,117 yards receiving to go along with four touchdowns. San Diego QB Phillip Rivers will be busy against a tough Chiefs defense that features linebacker Dee Ford, whose 10 sacks rank among the best in the NFL.
The Chiefs hold the slight advantage in the head-to-head battle, defeating the Chargers six times during that period. Kansas City should have little problems getting past the Chargers but don’t expect the game to go over BetOnline’s projected total points line of 45.
Kansas City Chiefs (-240) and the Under (45)
